00:00:00 – a football life is presented by Chase
00:00:04 – Derrick Thomas was on time for each of
00:00:06 – his 126 NFL sacks he was late for nearly
00:00:13 – everything else there was one of those
00:00:15 – guys he always was like late for every
00:00:18 – single things come and on maybe to be
00:00:20 – like the last one inherently walk in
00:00:22 – there like three seconds late almost
00:00:24 – like trying to annoy him and Marty would
00:00:27 – just go nuts with this I love the kid I
00:00:30 – really did but he was he was a challenge
00:00:34 – I always told them I said Derrick one of
00:00:37 – these day something bad is going to
00:00:38 – happen because you're late you might be
00:00:49 – the finest quarterback produce the last
00:00:51 – net here
00:00:52 – all righty
00:00:57 – convinced the light to the team game
00:01:01 – [Music]
00:01:02 – domani cocoon
00:01:13 – do you have a vivid memory of your
00:01:15 – father being five years old I don't know
00:01:18 – I don't have I don't have a vivid memory
00:01:20 – I have memories of vague instances but
00:01:24 – nothing very concrete
00:01:29 – [Music]
00:01:33 – I have a lot of memories but I don't
00:01:37 – know if there are actual memories or
00:01:39 – memories that I've created in my head of
00:01:41 – doors people have told me
00:01:48 – people come up to me a lot and sometimes
00:01:50 – they tell me stories about him and I
00:01:52 – really like it when people tell me
00:01:54 – stories because it kind of helps me
00:01:55 – connect the dots with who he was
00:01:59 – even though Derek hasn't been part of
00:02:02 – her life growing up she knows that
00:02:05 – that's her dad I think she wants to make
00:02:07 – him proud
00:02:08 – [Music]
00:02:10 – and my sophomore year I was a sixth man
00:02:13 – on varsity
00:02:14 – now this summer I'm doing a lot of work
00:02:16 – because starting next year I used him as
00:02:20 – a role model to try and elevate myself
00:02:23 – to be greater he reminds me dance he's
00:02:26 – so laid back nothing ruffles and
00:02:28 – feathers he got that from dear because
00:02:30 – momma gets riled up I'll never remember
00:02:32 – there Thomas the football player to me
00:02:36 – was Derrick Thomas my dad
00:02:40 – [Music]
00:02:41 – [Applause]
00:02:44 – when someone is in constant motion it's
00:02:47 – hard to get a clear picture someone
00:02:50 – called Derrick Thomas reckless but
00:02:53 – perhaps the more accurate description is
00:02:55 – restless
00:02:57 – he lived fast but was always behind
00:03:01 – schedule he fathered many children but
00:03:06 – was ever-present in their lives he spent
00:03:10 – nearly all of his multi-million dollar
00:03:11 – contracts but much of it went to
00:03:14 – children's charities in his 33 years he
00:03:18 – played linebacker defensive end
00:03:21 – philanthropist conspiracy theorist
00:03:24 – mentor and dad Derrick Thomas grew up in
00:03:33 – the pariah neighborhood near Miami
00:03:34 – he spent his formative years without a
00:03:37 – father and in need of an outlet Derrick
00:03:40 – is the product in part of the juvenile
00:03:43 – justice system and South Florida he got
00:03:46 – in trouble when he was a kid he was
00:03:49 – breaking in houses it would steal mopeds
00:03:52 – and take the parts off the mopeds and
00:03:55 – all that is kind of stuff so he was just
00:03:57 – going down the wrong track
00:04:01 – eventually he wound up in court and
00:04:04 – could have been sent to a juvenile
00:04:05 – detention center but the judge saw that
00:04:08 – the fourteen-year-old in front of him
00:04:10 – had potential he was a bright young man
00:04:13 – and he was very attached to his mother
00:04:17 – so we looked into alternatives and we
00:04:22 – put Derek until day marina's – he
00:04:25 – blossomed in addition to a high school
00:04:28 – curriculum the Dade Marine Institute
00:04:30 – taught aquatic skills but more important
00:04:34 – goal setting and discipline
00:04:37 – but gave him a little bit more incentive
00:04:40 – when he went he was so far behind in his
00:04:43 – grades but when he went there the
00:04:46 – teaching and the learning and experience
00:04:48 – that he idea it was priceless that was
00:04:51 – really a turning point in his life he
00:04:53 – finished the program ahead of schedule
00:04:55 – and was allowed to re-enroll at South
00:04:58 – Miami High School
00:04:59 – in his junior year Derrick played tight
00:05:02 – end and running back in his senior year
00:05:07 – he switched to defense and earned a
00:05:10 – football scholarship to the University
00:05:11 – of Alabama
00:05:17 – as an all-american with the Crimson Tide
00:05:21 – Derrick Thomas had 27 sacks in his
00:05:24 – senior year it's not a misprint it's
00:05:28 – real his numbers were superhuman he had
00:05:31 – leveraged speed and power to give him
00:05:35 – almost an unfair advantage over any
00:05:38 – ordinary mortal that tried to block he
00:05:47 – could be created he had his own move he
00:05:50 – could spend he could jump he had as much
00:05:54 – athletic build as most running back
00:05:56 – typically a college senior displays his
00:06:00 – athletic ability at the Scouting Combine
00:06:02 – but Derrick's agent advised him not to
00:06:05 – attend the NFL would have to come see
00:06:09 – him in Tuscaloosa I remember was a very
00:06:14 – hot day we had about seven other Alabama
00:06:17 – prospects working out with this Karl
00:06:19 – says we're gonna make him pay because he
00:06:21 – should be running at the combine so I
00:06:23 – said okay just so I want you working
00:06:24 – about hard everything ball drills
00:06:27 – dropping in space dropping in zone and
00:06:30 – now the other two linebackers during
00:06:32 – over there and their hands are on their
00:06:33 – knees up the field
00:06:34 – turning to running downfield running
00:06:36 – across the field arms starting to get
00:06:38 – sore throwing all these long passes and
00:06:40 – now the DBS are starting to bend over
00:06:42 – and Derrick's like I'm not going to get
00:06:44 – tired coach I go and you act like you're
00:06:46 – going to get tired
00:06:47 – how many more drills around they were
00:06:49 – impressed with it really really
00:06:51 – impressed
00:06:52 – tell me about Derek as I said he'll
00:06:54 – never get tired you can run him all day
00:06:56 – I said the second thing is if you dress
00:07:00 – this guy you better invest in LARM
00:07:02 – clocks coming up I never forget we're
00:07:07 – sitting in meeting you and Bill Caron
00:07:09 – was saying that Derek you know you
00:07:10 – supposed to drop back on his place
00:07:12 – and he rushed and he get his sack and
00:07:14 – all that he was like okay you know what
00:07:16 – can you say after winning Super Bowl for
00:07:27 – the Kansas City Chiefs missed the
00:07:30 – playoffs in 16 of the next 17 seasons in
00:07:39 – 1989 the Chiefs had a new general
00:07:42 – manager Carl Peterson
00:07:44 – a new coach Marty Schottenheimer and the
00:07:47 – fourth pick in the NFL Draft first draft
00:07:50 – choice we don't want to make a mistake
00:07:52 – we're rebuilding the foundation
00:07:55 – the Kansas eighties first-round
00:07:58 – selection
00:08:01 – Gary Tamas linebacker in Alabama one
00:08:05 – thing I beat him very well because they
00:08:07 – run a scheme similar to the one that I
00:08:08 – ran in college and I think I can execute
00:08:12 – and do real real Wilson
00:08:13 – [Applause]
00:08:21 – he was a nightmare for people that had
00:08:24 – to try to prepare for him because he had
00:08:26 – unique skills so it had quickness
00:08:30 – quickness records of a point of attack
00:08:33 – quickness
00:08:51 – Marty always used to tell them just go
00:08:53 – get the quarterback and that's what he
00:08:55 – did his rookie year
00:08:59 – I felt sorry for some of those poor
00:09:02 – tackles that came in had to go against
00:09:03 – him because they didn't realize what
00:09:05 – they were getting themselves into the
00:09:09 – Defensive Rookie of the Year amass ten
00:09:11 – sacks and three forced fumbles and
00:09:14 – helped to push the Chiefs to the first
00:09:16 – of nine straight winning seasons
00:09:19 – by price they paid games in his rookie
00:09:22 – year you said here here's a guy who he's
00:09:25 – going to be like Lawrence Taylor the
00:09:28 – next season
00:09:29 – Thomas forced six more fumbles and
00:09:31 – achieved a milestone even Lawrence
00:09:33 – Taylor only reached once in his career
00:09:36 – he went to 20 sacks the second year
00:09:39 – phenomenal
00:09:51 – as he established his credentials
00:09:56 – bringing quarterbacks to the ground
00:09:58 – Thomas's thoughts were often on the
00:10:01 – skies Derrick's father a captain in the
00:10:07 – United States Air Force was shot down
00:10:09 – over North Vietnam in 1972 when Derrick
00:10:12 – was five years old
00:10:13 – Eric on behalf of the powaaa Association
00:10:17 – we present this flag in remembrance of
00:10:19 – your father who was shot down an
00:10:21 – operation linebacker to the military and
00:10:24 – military service was his way of being
00:10:27 – connected to his father especially guys
00:10:31 – who flew jets and when you feel
00:10:33 – comfortably you can release your chin
00:10:35 – strap and take the helmet off we had
00:10:37 – Whiteman Air Force Base very close to us
00:10:39 – Derek I know would go on as time off out
00:10:42 – to Whiteman Air Force Base spent time
00:10:44 – with the personnel there Finn certainly
00:10:46 – was inside the aircraft a few times
00:10:52 – no had opportunity to go up with him so
00:10:54 – I just try to go on as many of these
00:10:57 – rides that possibly can and try to get
00:10:59 – some sense of what it actually feels
00:11:01 – like and what do you feel like and here
00:11:05 – comes some cheap
00:11:09 – military aircraft made a difference to
00:11:12 – him his dad flew at b-52 and we had once
00:11:17 – and allowed some of those flyover
00:11:19 – dereck new way ahead of time if there
00:11:23 – was going to be a flyover we may have
00:11:26 – them all the time now they were much
00:11:28 – more rare back when Derek was a young
00:11:31 – player in the league
00:11:32 – [Music]
00:11:33 – [Applause]
00:11:44 – every time those those planes used to
00:11:47 – come over ere I had you can just see the
00:11:49 – look in his eye and and he was going to
00:11:53 – be one of the special days I'm
00:11:54 – appreciate all that you're doing for us
00:11:56 – and one of people to base it really
00:11:57 – follow you and respect you and you're a
00:12:00 – great role model and thank you very very
00:12:01 – much thank you thank you very very cata
00:12:04 – bandana that was given him by a military
00:12:07 – gentleman that had silhouettes of bomber
00:12:10 – planes on the bandana and that's the day
00:12:13 – he lit up mr. Craig in week 10 of the
00:12:18 – 1990 season Kansas City hosted the
00:12:22 – Seattle Seahawks it was the only time
00:12:26 – during Derek Thomas's career that the
00:12:28 – Chiefs played on Veterans Day you know
00:12:33 – have after missiles that at 100,000 feet
00:12:36 – hit a barn and we had the size lot
00:12:39 – standing with his teed off
00:12:53 – my first two Russians I had to say
00:12:55 – that's it
00:12:56 – this could be a remarkable day
00:13:03 – in the second half Thomas sack Dave
00:13:06 – Craig five more times and established a
00:13:09 – new single game NFL record
00:13:21 – just think about it seven sacks in one
00:13:24 – game I mean that's a career for some
00:13:27 – people on the defensive line the thing I
00:13:29 – most remember about that game is the
00:13:31 – fact I didn't get that's the one that
00:13:34 – still haunts me
00:13:38 – [Applause]
00:13:52 – I don't believe it
00:13:55 – we threw the ball I just stood there and
00:13:57 – watched and I'm like somebody's a knock
00:14:00 – the ball down somebody knocked the ball
00:14:01 – out and boom his receiver catches the
00:14:04 – ball I'm like nobody knocks the ball out
00:14:06 – and it was like he's long you know we
00:14:11 – really lost the game coming up the sack
00:14:15 – man who never let go of his inner child
00:14:17 – ball snap
00:14:19 – Randall
00:14:26 – [Music]
00:14:43 – work they're gonna go get back I'm
00:14:47 – really getting dog died in this deal
00:14:48 – today
00:14:49 – Derrick Thomas was not a very good
00:14:51 – practice player in fact he would drive
00:14:53 – coaches crazy because you know he would
00:14:56 – go through do his fundamentals and his
00:14:58 – technique but he wasn't putting a lot of
00:15:00 – effort into a practice kind of just
00:15:03 – lollygag through things I'd kick him off
00:15:05 – and just get so mad at him and telling
00:15:09 – me he ain't gonna be worth a crap on
00:15:10 – Sunday you can't do this every Friday he
00:15:12 – might kind of start working a move and
00:15:15 – then just shut it down he just go real
00:15:26 – fast and stop they get out him and
00:15:29 – that's this kind of way he was just I'll
00:15:31 – be fine on Sunday coach you know I will
00:15:32 – be on Sundays a lobby guy because he
00:15:39 – came to play and he was dynamic
00:15:52 – you would swear he's offside
00:15:57 – [Music]
00:15:59 – he would jump the line and the left
00:16:01 – tackles not even out of his stance and
00:16:03 – you're thinking he's definitely offsides
00:16:05 – and he never was he get off the football
00:16:09 – fencing any man I've ever seen in my
00:16:10 – life
00:16:11 – the guy excellently made me change my
00:16:13 – stance from a right hand stand planning
00:16:15 – left side for me actually switching my
00:16:17 – stance and put my hands down the
00:16:19 – left-hand side well I can look in from
00:16:22 – the left side and look at there Thomas
00:16:24 – knew he never watched about Washington
00:16:26 – when he moved I moved but he was always
00:16:28 – a step of seat in front of me
00:16:35 – [Applause]
00:16:39 – we could panic toward his body I've
00:16:42 – never seen anything like even be running
00:16:45 – making that loop to the quarterback and
00:16:48 – his body d'Alene was like that and there
00:16:50 – was no surface for for you to put your
00:16:52 – hands on it was amazing
00:16:58 – those aren't things you can coach
00:17:01 – those are god-given abilities and if you
00:17:05 – nurture those abilities they just become
00:17:07 – unbelievable unbelievable almost like
00:17:12 – some of the stories of Thomas's exploits
00:17:15 – there were at least three occasions
00:17:19 – where Derek pulled Babe Ruth and called
00:17:22 – a shot he would come out of the
00:17:24 – defensive huddle and put his arms up and
00:17:27 – signal for safe and one of those was
00:17:31 – against testigo young will throw he's
00:17:35 – being rusty
00:17:37 – [Applause]
00:17:37 – [Music]
00:17:38 – [Applause]
00:17:40 – [Music]
00:17:41 – here's a guy that couldn't sleep cut the
00:17:43 – ant blocking if you didn't feel him you
00:17:46 – knew is around post regular football for
00:17:48 – me
00:17:48 – [Applause]
00:17:49 – [Music]
00:17:51 – [Applause]
00:17:57 – there it was never happy with just a
00:17:59 – sack she went to Paul he went afternoon
00:18:01 – explained to me at length about how if
00:18:03 – you hit him at just the right spot on
00:18:05 – the wrist the hem can't hold the ball it
00:18:09 – has to come out Humphreys up back to
00:18:12 – fill in the pocket and a fall knocked
00:18:14 – away by Thomas its recovered but here's
00:18:16 – a hoodie
00:18:17 – you could do it exactly right and even
00:18:21 – come to the sideline after you've given
00:18:22 – up the sack and said coach I did
00:18:24 – everything right and coach would say
00:18:26 – you're exactly right you did get lucky
00:18:29 – next time
00:18:31 – the third Thomas it's like I'm a running
00:18:36 – back and I have the ball and they have
00:18:37 – to actually stop me and I think
00:18:40 – sometimes I utilize some of the moves
00:18:42 – that are backward use in order to get
00:18:43 – there pretty successful and sometimes
00:18:46 – the nine-time Pro Bowler finished with
00:18:50 – 41 forced fumbles and 120 six and a half
00:18:54 – sacks six sacks shot of the pass rushing
00:18:57 – dynamo he emulated Lawrence Taylor
00:19:00 – I think Lawrence Taylor was better
00:19:02 – all-around player but even Lawrence
00:19:05 – Taylor I don't think just had that sense
00:19:07 – of building maybe we've got a winner in
00:19:15 – Los Angeles I've seen a lot of great
00:19:19 – players over the years and I think the
00:19:21 – singular category of rushing the passer
00:19:25 – from the perimeter
00:19:27 – nothing liking Thomas's pride in his
00:19:30 – work was always on display Derek had
00:19:33 – this license plate i sacked cubies
00:19:36 – because that's what he did on down the
00:19:39 – year he had I made it and I thought that
00:19:42 – was one of the greatest things ever Dale
00:19:45 – T the 90s belong to DT
00:19:53 – the Chiefs were in the midst of a
00:19:55 – remarkable franchise turnaround and as
00:19:58 – the team flourished
00:19:59 – so did Derek's personality leave me I'm
00:20:05 – a prankster I'm a character you know
00:20:06 – somebody has always got something up
00:20:08 – their sleeve something going on he would
00:20:12 – test you but always in a fun way and
00:20:14 – then he would give you that smile that
00:20:16 – would just melt s*** he had the most
00:20:21 – engaging smile off I think most any
00:20:25 – player I ever had been around it was
00:20:28 – like the son I never had to be honest
00:20:30 – with you that's how I looked at him he
00:20:32 – was a little boy he didn't want to grow
00:20:34 – old he went to Chicago to a Bulls game
00:20:37 – one time he's whispering in the phone
00:20:39 – I'm like why are you whispering he says
00:20:41 – I'm in Michael Jordan's basement and I'm
00:20:45 – never coming home
00:20:49 – Derek had gone from a troubled child to
00:20:52 – a successful man and now it was his turn
00:20:55 – to help kids make that same
00:20:57 – transformation
00:20:59 – judge Gladstone and others help Derrick
00:21:01 – launch the third and long Foundation
00:21:03 – which selected 58 kids each year and
00:21:07 – enrolled them in a weekly literacy
00:21:09 – program Derrick devoted so much of his
00:21:14 – life to seeing to it that other kids
00:21:17 – didn't get into the kind of trouble he
00:21:20 – did every Saturday before home games
00:21:23 – Derrick would meet the third and long
00:21:25 – kids at a Kansas City Library and read
00:21:28 – to them
00:21:28 – he loved furlong and everything it meant
00:21:31 – cuz he saw himself and all these kids
00:21:33 – that he tried to help it was not unusual
00:21:35 – for Derek to have his teammates on
00:21:37 – Saturday before home game have Joe
00:21:38 – Montana Marcus Allen Hill Smith reading
00:21:41 – to the kids third and long also gave
00:21:45 – kids an opportunity to experience things
00:21:47 – that most children could only dream
00:21:49 – about Derrick Thomas had an event at the
00:21:52 – Bar Association and he invited Clarence
00:21:55 – Thomas and I watch some of the Clarence
00:21:57 – Thomas and said I really want to be the
00:22:00 – third black Supreme Court judge and he
00:22:02 – just kind of gives it about it
00:22:04 – I get a certain joy out of helping the
00:22:06 – kids in my program and and taking them
00:22:09 – different places in addition to joy
00:22:12 – Derrick got recognition in 1992
00:22:17 – President George Bush named him one of
00:22:20 – his thousand points of light and in 1993
00:22:23 – he won the NFL's men of the Year award
00:22:26 – all a charitable work he did a lot never
00:22:31 – publicized didn't want it that way
00:22:35 – there was a young boy down southeastern
00:22:39 – Oklahoma beautiful little boy named
00:22:41 – Phillip TP and Phillip had hemophilia
00:22:44 – contracted AIDS and the local teams down
00:22:47 – there out of ignorance prejudice are
00:22:49 – both were refusing to play his team in
00:22:51 – basketball and baseball and Derrick
00:22:53 – found out about it
00:22:54 – chartered a plane and flew down there
00:22:56 – and Derrick and Phillip disappeared in
00:22:58 – the back room and they play video games
00:23:00 – for an hour
00:23:01 – Derrick had given him his first Pro Bowl
00:23:03 – Jersey that was on a Tuesday we learned
00:23:08 – on Thursday that Phillip to die
00:23:12 – something I didn't know about till 10
00:23:14 – years later and it was just how Derrick
00:23:17 – was I think is important for me to try
00:23:20 – to strive to make it to Canton Ohio what
00:23:23 – I think is more important on my way
00:23:25 – there to help and touch as many people
00:23:28 – as I possibly can you want to sack
00:23:30 – quarterbacks you want to help kids that
00:23:32 – was there coughs next the Chiefs dynamic
00:23:37 – defensive duo does everything together
00:23:40 – she's got some nerve Neal wanting her to
00:23:45 – collect could have saved him up to 44
00:23:47 – percent
00:23:55 – the divisional round of the 1993
00:23:58 – playoffs brought Derrick Thomas to
00:24:00 – Houston where the Chiefs had lost 30 to
00:24:03 – nothing during the regular season
00:24:06 – [Music]
00:24:16 – [Music]
00:24:20 – Derek in big games he was gonna shine
00:24:29 – and he was on fire
00:24:35 – [Music]
00:24:40 – Derrick Thomas the all-pro linebacker
00:24:47 – 28:20 victory secured a date with the
00:24:50 – 3-time defending AFC champion Buffalo
00:24:52 – Bills
00:24:54 – a trip to the Super Bowl was now within
00:24:57 – reach for Derrick Thomas Davis thought
00:25:00 – this is it I'm going to get my chance
00:25:06 – [Music]
00:25:20 – the Chiefs broad confidence to Buffalo
00:25:22 – but not love
00:25:27 – [Music]
00:25:29 – of the often cold
00:25:33 – they're legalized that's kind of
00:25:36 – portended
00:25:37 – what was about to happen
00:25:46 – one Montana went out with the concussion
00:25:48 – the air just escaped from the balloon
00:25:52 – the Chiefs biggest offensive star missed
00:25:56 – almost the entire second half which gave
00:25:59 – him something in common with their
00:26:00 – biggest defensive star Derek stood on
00:26:03 – the sidelines most of that second half
00:26:06 – unfortunately in an effort to stymie the
00:26:09 – bills running game
00:26:10 – Kansas City's coaching staff employed in
00:26:13 – alignment that rarely included Derek
00:26:16 – Thomas the Chiefs are going to keep
00:26:19 – Derek Thomas on the sidelines taking one
00:26:23 – of your best players and putting him on
00:26:24 – the bench it still doesn't make sense to
00:26:27 – me today
00:26:28 – the defensive scheme didn't work they
00:26:31 – still put a lot of rushing yards on us
00:26:33 – and we ended up obviously losing the AFC
00:26:36 – Championship game Buffalo Bills the beat
00:26:39 – the Kansas City Chiefs 32:13 that was a
00:26:43 – huge blow to Derek to lose that game and
00:26:46 – then lose it
00:26:47 – sitting on the bench as he probably had
00:26:50 – this career even after that game we were
00:26:55 – so talented particularly on the
00:26:56 – defensive side I think we all believed
00:26:59 – that we would get back there over the
00:27:04 – next four years
00:27:04 – Thomas and the Chiefs won 44 times in
00:27:07 – the regular season and not once in the
00:27:10 – playoffs and is kicked it up on its sail
00:27:14 – choir to the left oh good
00:27:16 – mr. real goal of the game will continue
00:27:20 – to strive to get better and we'll get to
00:27:23 – work were last year and we won't have a
00:27:25 – d*** kickin to miss a kid
00:27:28 – [Applause]
00:27:34 – Thomas and wheel Smith combined for 181
00:27:38 – sacks while playing for eight seasons
00:27:40 – together in Kansas City before the 1997
00:27:45 – season
00:27:46 – Thomas's pass rushing partner and close
00:27:48 – friend signed with the AFC West rivals
00:27:51 – Denver Broncos I think when Neal left
00:27:54 – and went to Denver I think that really
00:27:57 – hurt read in hey baby
00:28:12 – he needed Neil and Neil needed Dirk and
00:28:15 – when when they were split up you know I
00:28:17 – think it hurt both of them now he'll
00:28:19 – come back next year and will you know
00:28:21 – we'll live happily ever after so do you
00:28:23 – really think he'll be back in a Kansas
00:28:25 – City chief uniform no doubt in my mind
00:28:26 – he was into now he really believed that
00:28:29 – I was going to get an opportunity coming
00:28:34 – [Applause]
00:28:40 – Smith did return during the divisional
00:28:43 – round of the playoffs and contributed to
00:28:46 – a familiar frustrating result for Thomas
00:28:49 – the after the Denver playoff game there
00:28:53 – was a helmet Chuck which was unusual for
00:28:56 – him and a expletive and then the word
00:29:01 – offense how frustrating is it to go out
00:29:04 – there
00:29:04 – play a game like you guys did that in
00:29:07 – all things can't perform well enough to
00:29:09 – give you guys a win
00:29:10 – well there is took those losses very
00:29:18 – hard because look I mean at some point
00:29:20 – when you're a great player you start
00:29:21 – thinking about your legacy and you know
00:29:23 – Derek saw himself as the heir to
00:29:27 – Lawrence Taylor's throne well you can't
00:29:29 – have that Kingdom unless you reach the
00:29:31 – Super Bowl and reach the biggest stage
00:29:32 – Derrick Thomas never stepped on that
00:29:35 – stage his former sidekick stood on a
00:29:38 – podium twice while playing for the
00:29:41 – Broncos
00:29:46 – [Music]
00:29:49 – while the Chiefs stumbled into playoffs
00:29:52 – the man with the quickest first step in
00:29:55 – the NFL was always moving full speed
00:29:58 – Derek was over committed he lived like
00:30:01 – it air was on fire he would commit to
00:30:03 – doing ten different things and then
00:30:04 – trying to fit them all in and there were
00:30:06 – two things that would get him to sit
00:30:09 – still the war in Vietnam and the JFK
00:30:14 – assassination a dark page in the annals
00:30:18 – of America has been written to the crank
00:30:20 – of an assassin's bullet I was part of a
00:30:23 – morning radio show and for four years
00:30:25 – had tried to get Derek to come on the
00:30:26 – show
00:30:27 – well one time we had as a guest a woman
00:30:29 – named Jeanne h*** she's in this abreu to
00:30:32 – film the woman in the red raincoat she
00:30:35 – testified that she saw smoke coming from
00:30:38 – the grassy knoll called Derek Derek we
00:30:42 – got gene Hill what she's gonna be in a
00:30:45 – studio I'll be there I said now come on
00:30:47 – don't leave me hanging so I'll be there
00:30:49 – meeting her was like meeting a superstar
00:30:52 – and I can remember Jean Hill said this
00:30:55 – guy knows his stuff
00:30:58 – conspiracy theories were his hobby but
00:31:01 – his passion was the military it was an
00:31:04 – everlasting theme in his life his
00:31:06 – connection to his father his connection
00:31:09 – to the military in a bombing raid
00:31:13 – codenamed linebacker to Captain Robert J
00:31:18 – Thomas was shot down on December 18th
00:31:21 – 1972 and was listed as missing in action
00:31:25 – until 1980 I stated that one online
00:31:30 – to find out welcome to the man my father
00:31:34 – actually was he's thought to touch him
00:31:38 – really you know I'm only missing one
00:31:40 – thing in my life and it's that father
00:31:42 – losing a father is tragic sharing a
00:31:46 – father is complicated he had seven
00:31:49 – children by five different women I don't
00:31:51 – think that was a secret it's not the
00:31:55 – right way to go about it but you know he
00:31:57 – tried the best that he could he spent
00:32:01 – time with them I know that during his
00:32:03 – off season he would try to bring them
00:32:04 – all together we went on family vacations
00:32:07 – I was always in touch with my brothers
00:32:10 – and sisters they would meet up at his
00:32:11 – house they'd have little functions at
00:32:13 – his house they they loved each other
00:32:15 – you keep hearing stories about I was it
00:32:18 – they're my kids swim meet and there was
00:32:20 – very fun Christmas was such a big deal
00:32:24 – to him he always bought so much really
00:32:26 – over the top and I asked him about it
00:32:29 – and he told me that was his dad wasn't
00:32:31 – there to to be there with you on
00:32:34 – Christmas morning whether it was his own
00:32:37 – children his third and long kids for all
00:32:40 – the students in Kansas City Derek was
00:32:43 – generous to a fault he would take his
00:32:46 – whole you know how to get the Nike
00:32:48 – contract for he take his contract and
00:32:50 – use it on the kids in his program he's
00:32:53 – erasing the death of 4,000 children
00:32:55 – youngsters who can't afford to pay their
00:32:58 – library fine Derek did some
00:33:01 – irresponsible things and Derek liked to
00:33:04 – have a good time Derek like cars but
00:33:06 – Derek spent a lot of money trying to
00:33:08 – make kids happy
00:33:09 – he blew as much money trying to do the
00:33:12 – right thing as he did doing the wrong
00:33:15 – thing
00:33:18 – coming up it wasn't the character of
00:33:21 – their tongues I've never seen him ever
00:33:25 – lose his cool he just lost it quick
00:33:38 – pattern Oxana discuss the painful
00:33:40 – [Applause]
00:33:47 – for those of you not aware history was
00:33:49 – made today after over a decade of play
00:33:51 – Derrick Thomas got his first directed
00:33:56 – entire to the defense's front line the
00:33:58 – end zone photo of it in the final two
00:34:04 – seasons of the 1990s Derrick Thomas not
00:34:08 – only made the only interception of his
00:34:10 – career he repeated his ruthian routine
00:34:13 – and nearly matched his single game NFL
00:34:15 – record for sacks
00:34:21 – safety Derrick Thomas this 6-pack of the
00:34:26 – game for Thomas and the Chiefs the close
00:34:30 – of the decade was more accurately
00:34:32 – represented by a week 11 home game
00:34:34 – against Denver
00:34:35 – it was the Monday night meltdown I
00:34:38 – couldn't believe what I was saying and
00:34:41 – I'm gonna bet that most people in the
00:34:43 – stadium felt the same way personal foul
00:34:45 – defense number 58 a blow to the head
00:34:50 – on a single 80-yard Broncos touchdown
00:34:53 – drive the Chiefs committed five 15-yard
00:34:56 – penalty
00:34:57 – including three by Derrick Thomas it was
00:35:01 – frankly to me more embarrassing than
00:35:04 – some of playoff loss one of the more
00:35:08 – embarrassing moments in sheep's history
00:35:12 – I have no idea what shannon sharpe is
00:35:14 – saying or what's going on out there was
00:35:16 – personal stuff they did their research
00:35:19 – his foot that way they did their
00:35:21 – research they knew what buttons to push
00:35:24 – the chief suspended Thomas for one game
00:35:27 – without pay and banned him from their
00:35:29 – facility for the entire week I would
00:35:32 – like to apologize for my conduct last
00:35:36 – evening it was was not characteristic of
00:35:42 – my game at the conclusion of the 1998
00:35:46 – season the only NFL head coach Derrick
00:35:49 – Thomas had known Marty Schottenheimer
00:35:51 – stepped down he was replaced by one of
00:35:56 – Thomas's most beloved mentors defensive
00:35:59 – coordinator Gunther Cunningham but 1999
00:36:03 – brought more disappointment in the
00:36:06 – season finale
00:36:07 – Thomas committed a running into the
00:36:09 – kicker penalty that led to a Raiders
00:36:11 – touchdown as a result of the overtime
00:36:14 – loss the Chiefs missed the playoffs Joe
00:36:18 – Ned he's going to hit it right down the
00:36:20 – middle the Oakland Raiders have ended
00:36:23 – the Chiefs season with a 41 to 38
00:36:26 – victory the Chiefs missed the playoffs
00:36:31 – in 1999 but Derrick Thomas didn't like
00:36:34 – to miss out on anything
00:36:38 – the Rams were hosting the NFC
00:36:40 – Championship and he planned on taking a
00:36:43 – short flight to st. Louis to see the
00:36:45 – game and he's driving fast because he's
00:36:49 – late
00:36:50 – they made the mine up at the last second
00:36:52 – another Derrick Thomas trait late no
00:36:54 – Derrick Thomas trade that day in Kansas
00:36:56 – City a fast-moving winter storm
00:36:59 – blanketed the region causing treacherous
00:37:02 – road conditions there were 11 people
00:37:04 – killed that day in Kansas City in the
00:37:07 – ice storm traffic accidents 11 people I
00:37:11 – was at the office and I jumped in a car
00:37:14 – to drive home as it was snowing was an
00:37:17 – 18-wheeler making a turn and I spun out
00:37:20 – in front of that truck and it barely
00:37:22 – missed me and I got home and my wife was
00:37:27 – coming right at me and all all I saw is
00:37:36 – tears running down her eyes and I have
00:37:39 – two children I felt one of them had
00:37:41 – passed away and she said my god
00:37:45 – Derrick's dying still to come on a
00:37:49 – football life I lived through some Poe
00:37:52 – materials and lo and behold I found my
00:37:56 – eulogy for Derrick at his Miami funeral
00:37:59 – compared to save them
00:38:02 – [Music]
00:38:12 – according to eyewitnesses Derek Thomas
00:38:15 – was driving faster than road conditions
00:38:17 – warranted when his car went off the
00:38:19 – highway and rolled several times three
00:38:24 – people were in the car the one wearing a
00:38:27 – seatbelt walked away
00:38:29 – Derek's friend Michael Telus was
00:38:32 – pronounced dead at the scene while Derek
00:38:35 – was paralyzed from the chest down I
00:38:39 – remember kissing him on the forehead and
00:38:42 – Hospital telling him that it was a heck
00:38:44 – of a way to get out of nine on seven
00:38:47 – well I knew his spine was severed and he
00:38:51 – felt like he was going to play again he
00:38:54 – kept saying you know I'm a play for you
00:38:56 – again someday and I'm gonna play for you
00:38:58 – in Pittsburgh 1 stabilized Derek was
00:39:02 – flown to a hospital in Miami that
00:39:04 – specialized in spinal injuries the man
00:39:08 – with the quickest first step in the NFL
00:39:10 – now face the possibility that he had
00:39:13 – taken his last step it's too early to
00:39:16 – tell right now we just have to see how
00:39:18 – he does we'll take a day by day it's big
00:39:21 – and strong as he is you find it and in
00:39:23 – the way that a mother would know is he's
00:39:25 – scared right now of course anybody would
00:39:29 – be scared at this time he just refused
00:39:32 – to accept what had happened to him he
00:39:36 – felt so confined in the hospital he had
00:39:39 – to get out he had to be Derek he got
00:39:41 – taken from the hospital somebody took
00:39:42 – him to a party somewhere just so he
00:39:44 – could get out the morning of February 8
00:39:48 – marked the beginning of his third week
00:39:51 – at the Miami hospital
00:39:54 – I bathed him and I got him dressed and
00:39:58 – everything and I called the nurse in for
00:40:01 – us to put him in the wheelchair to get
00:40:04 – him to rehab and at that moment as I
00:40:08 – started one back you know and for me I
00:40:11 – had been in nursing for 33 years and my
00:40:15 – son is here and it's nothing that I can
00:40:18 – do you know nothing I could do to save
00:40:20 – him
00:40:25 – Derrick Thomas died from a pulmonary
00:40:27 – embolism a blood clot that developed in
00:40:31 – his legs and traveled to his lungs he
00:40:35 – was 33 years old I never looked at
00:40:39 – Derrick Thomas's football player I
00:40:42 – looked at Derrick Thomas as a one of the
00:40:45 – finer people I'd ever been around
00:40:48 – I loved him about as much as any human
00:40:51 – being I've ever known an open casket
00:40:54 – viewing was held in Arrowhead Stadium
00:40:57 – followed by funerals in both Kansas City
00:41:00 – and Miami for his fans his friends and
00:41:06 – his family the loss of Derrick Thomas
00:41:09 – was almost too much to bear I just
00:41:14 – remember reaching down the piston and it
00:41:17 – was just like everything that I had been
00:41:20 – holding in came out I cried for at least
00:41:24 – an hour
00:41:25 – Darius saw them closing the casket he
00:41:30 – started screaming I want my pool up with
00:41:32 – my pool where they take him up Alexa
00:41:36 – told me very proudly she was coloring a
00:41:38 – picture for her dad
00:41:39 – I kneel down door and I tell her okay
00:41:42 – remember we talked to your dad you know
00:41:44 – he lives in heaven now
00:41:47 – and then she says you know like a
00:41:49 – three-year-old does I know I'm going to
00:41:52 – take it outside and the wind will blow
00:41:54 – it up during my first day long lunch and
00:42:00 – I found dairy that I would like to
00:42:03 – become a Supreme Court justice I am
00:42:06 – thankful for the moms together he would
00:42:08 – smile and call me justice I am more
00:42:11 – thankful for the soul of man met a young
00:42:14 – man like me and told me he cared that
00:42:17 – youngster had a spark that when lit was
00:42:20 – a flame of goodness
00:42:22 – Preston peace Derek
00:42:26 – you are you Derek Thomas left behind a
00:42:35 – tangled legacy he had children with five
00:42:39 – different women none of whom he married
00:42:41 – and died without a will he was a
00:42:46 – restless occasionally reckless soul who
00:42:50 – left this world much too early but left
00:42:54 – behind much to celebrate I am holding my
00:43:04 – son's report card for his 10th grade
00:43:07 – year and my son has a 4.0 eighth grade
00:43:13 – point average I just try to be a lot
00:43:16 – like him in the fact that I'm a giving
00:43:17 – trustworthy person if you need me to do
00:43:19 – something I'll get it done for you
00:43:21 – Alexa has a 4.0 she takes all AP and
00:43:25 – advanced classes she has gosh I think
00:43:29 – over 25 national record
00:43:33 – people always tell me I have my dad
